The Visit That Changed Everything

When a community mobilizer knocked on her door in Aurahi municipality, Radha was already well into her pregnancy. She had never attended an antenatal care visit and did not know what danger signs to watch for. She was deeply afraid of what giving birth at a hospital might cost her family. 

Radha’s story is not unusual. In the communities surrounding Aurahi municipality, home delivery was common. Trust in local health facilities was low. For families stretched by poverty, the calculation often pointed away from institutional care. 

The community mobilizer kept coming back. 

Visit after visit, she sat with Radha and her family, working through a birth preparedness plan together. She explained what danger signs to watch for and how to plan for transportation. She counseled Radha’s husband and other family members too, because she understood that the decision to seek care is rarely made alone.

With every visit, something slowly shifted. By the time Radha reached her seventh antenatal visit, they had already checked some important items off their birth preparedness checklist: setting aside money for transport, identifying a blood donor, and confirming the location of the nearest referral facility. They were ready to welcome their newest family member. 

When labor began and complications appeared, the preparation paid off. Radha was transferred to Janakpur Provincial Hospital, where she delivered her baby safely by cesarean section (c-section). Both mom and baby recovered well and are settling in at home.

Radha’s safe birth story did not happen because of a policy or a program alone. It happened because someone kept showing up. Radha and her newborn did not just survive. They went home healthy, prepared, and cared for. That is what this work is for.
