Why does Waku need an upgraded Birthing Center?
“There are too many home deliveries as well as high neonatal death in our area. A newly renovated birthing center will help us immensely with improving the maternal and neonatal health outcomes of our community.
Pregnant women usually come to our Health Facility for health checkups. They also want to come to us for their delivery, as they think that it is safe to come to the Waku Health Post for their delivery and complication management, but currently, we don’t have a proper birthing center in the health post, so we are unable to conduct deliveries leading to us having to refer every delivery case to another part of the District.
Once we upgrade our health post, we predict that there will be an increase in antenatal care visits and we think that we will be able to provide better and safer services. We will also have more space to store essential drugs and medical supplies after the renovation so we will always be able to manage any essential medicine and supplies needed to maintain the Government’s Birthing Center requirements.
There will be a feeling of responsibility among local stakeholders after we have Birthing Center as they have also contributed to this renovation, giving them a feeling of ownership. We expect that the HFOMC and local body will be more in action after the improvement of the Health Post as there will be an increase in delivery service.
Finally, the renovated Birthing Center will ultimately decrease the number of referral cases. We would be able to manage most of the cases here and we expect to provide quality maternal and newborn services to enhance the maternal and newborn health status of Waku.”
