Standing with Nepal: An Update on Our Flood Response
On August 26, catastrophic floods swept through central Nepal, destroying homes, health facilities, and entire villages. In the days since, our team has been working across Rasuwa and Nuwakot, two of the hardest-hit districts, alongside the Government of Nepal, to support families and communities affected by the disaster.
The crisis is still unfolding
The scale of this disaster is becoming clearer each day. Government assessment reports that approximately 1.6 million people have been affected across five districts, with Rasuwa and Nuwakot among the hardest hit. Search and rescue operations continue, and the number of people affected and displaced continues to grow as those operations expand.
Thousands of people remain displaced and are now living in temporary centers. Roads and bridges have been washed away or blocked, leaving some communities isolated, and damaged health facilities have made it increasingly urgent to keep essential health services running.
From rescue to sustained relief
Search and rescue has rightly been the immediate priority in the first days of the disaster. As access improves, the need is shifting toward relief, making sure assistance reaches the displaced and isolated communities that need it most. This is where our team is focusing its efforts.
What our team has accomplished so far
Since August 29, One Heart Worldwide has been supporting the emergency response in Rasuwa and Nuwakot, in close coordination with government agencies, health facilities, local authorities, and humanitarian partners. Our work so far includes:
Supporting government-led needs assessments and data management
Providing psychosocial first aid to survivors, both individuals and groups
Supporting rescue and recovery efforts with basic supplies and equipment
Providing essential medicines and medical supplies to hospitals and health facilities
Helping health facilities maintain vaccine cold chains and essential services
Supporting displaced families in temporary centers with food, household items, tents, and hygiene and dignity kits
Providing food, cooking utensils, clothing, blankets, tarps, and hygiene supplies to pregnant women and new mothers.
Providing power backup and essential supplies to health facilities, health offices, and local governments
What comes next
The needs are evolving rapidly. Over the next few weeks, our team will continue supporting emergency health services, psychosocial care, temporary centers, and the distribution of essential relief supplies. At the same time, we will begin to assess the longer-term needs of the recovery ahead, including rebuilding the health facilities these communities depend on.
Recovery from a disaster of this scale takes far longer than the emergency itself. Having worked in these communities for years, alongside the Government of Nepal, we are committed to ensuring that affected families are not left behind as the response shifts toward long-term recovery.
